The Alfred Mann Institutes

An Alfred Mann Institute for Biomedical Development (AMI) is a private operating foundation, a 501(3)(c) university-based “product development” Institute that advances biomedical technologies to a later stage for industry transfer to ensure commercialization of ideas that improve human health. The Institute is staffed with individuals with pertinent industry experience in medical device, pharmaceutical and biologic commercialization. By advancing product development to a later stage, following a standard industry-based product development process, the technologies will be licensed or sold at meaningfully higher rates, thereby enhancing the value to the inventor and the university. The Alfred Mann Institutes are designed to function in perpetuity under the university umbrella. The ultimate goal is to ensure the commercialization of ideas that improve human health.

Each Alfred E. Mann Institute will be endowed with a minimum of $100 million from the Alfred Mann Foundation for Biomedical Engineering. In addition to the endowment, universities will receive reimbursement for various administration services. Additional funds may be allocated to the AMI based on performance.

Three AMIs have been established to date and include:

  • AMI at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California, operational in 2001
  • AMIT, AMI at The Technion, Haifa, Israel, established 2007
  • AMI at Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana, established 2008
