Established in 1985, the Alfred Mann Foundation for Scientific Research is California non-profit medical research foundation dedicated to delivering advanced medical technologies to the public that provide significant improvements to the health, security, and quality of life for people suffering from debilitating medical conditions.

David Hankin became the CEO of this Foundation in 2007.. David is an attorney who previously held the positions of the Foundation’s General Counsel since 2004 and Chief Financial Officer since 2005. Dr. Joseph Schulman led the Foundation from its inception in 1985 as the President and Chief Scientist for 21 years, supporting the development of a breadth of technologies. Dr. Schulman is now the Chief Scientist of the AEMFBE.

The Alfred Mann Foundation for Scientific Research’s innovations to the cochlear implant allowed, for the first time, audio frequencies up to 7000 Hz to be interpreted, vastly enriching patients’ ability to understand speech, use the telephone and listen to music. The intellectual property covering the cochlear implant was licensed in 1993 for development and commercialization.

The Alfred Mann Foundation for Scientific Research focuses on implantable neurostimulator systems to potentially improve the lives and health of patients with a variety of conditions and ailments arising from stroke and spinal cord injuries to migraines, epilepsy and obesity.

From the translation of medical devices the Alfred Mann Foundation for Scientific Research has entered into licensing agreements and earned royalties and equities that in the aggregate will return over $200 million to its endowment.

This Foundation is located about 30 minutes north of UCLA in the 167 acre Mann Biomedical Park, with a staff of >100 including researchers, engineers, regulatory and clinical staff and attorneys.
