Combination Products

Combination products are those products that contain combinations of drugs, devices or biotechnology that are physically, chemically or otherwise combined where both are required to achieve the intended use.

New developments in pharmacology, biotechnology, genomics and proteomics have recently been able to be physically, chemically, or otherwise combine to improve human health. Examples of combination products include drug eluting stents to keep clogged arteries open, orthopedic implants with growth factors to accelerate healing, implanted pumps that deliver minute amounts of pain drugs directly to the spinal fluid to provide relief while significantly reducing side effects. While the initial focus of a university-based Alfred E. Mann Institutes is not anticipated to be involved in one of these more complex technologies, it is anticipated that as the field of combination products advances and the product development skills resident within an Alfred E. Mann Institute mature, that it may be possible to select one of these technologies.
