Our Mission

The philanthropic mission of Alfred Mann is to expedite the development and commercialization of breakthrough biomedical technologies that will benefit mankind by establishing independent commercialization enablement and product development focused Alfred Mann Institutes (AMIs) for Biomedical Development at elite universities. The broad AMI vision is the creation of a consortium of such Institutes, which although being independent entities separate from one another under their respective university umbrellas, are linked together by a mission, model of operation for product development, collaboration and common governance structures and Affiliation Agreements. The AMIs are linked by the Alfred Mann Foundation for Biomedical Engineering (FBE) for their funding, affiliation agreements, and provision of additional support resources beyond the large endowment and operating capital.

The AMIs function to bridge the early stage funding gap for technology to establish manufacturable commercial products with significantly minimized forward risk, the technology transfer stage can garner significantly higher value, and the likelihood of commercialization can be significantly increased. Viable university health science technologies typically fail to reach commercialization, whether pre- or post-tech transfer, due to a lack of necessary venture funds, resources or corporate interest to bridge the early stage and engineering model technology to commercial product. The AMI brings development resources before the technology exits from under the university umbrella, to optimize the acquisition opportunities for successful commercialization.
