Intellectual Property

An AMI operates as a university-governed private operating foundation on a university’s campus. An AMI is closely aligned with the Technology Transfer Office of the partnering university. The AMI Executive Director and management staff interface with the university Technology Transfer office reviewing intellectual property to identify biomedical technology that may benefit from the advantages offered by an AMI.

The university owns the intellectual property created by their researchers which is licensed to the AMI if a project is adopted. Under the terms of the agreement, the AMI has the right to review biomedical intellectual property disclosed to the Technology Transfer Office unless the biomedical technology is already licensed to another party..

Adoption of a biomedical technology into an AMI will increase the technology’s opportunities and probability of success in commercialization, as well as enhancing the value at the time of product license or other exit strategy. This advantage is anticipated due to the advanced level of product maturity achieved with the industry experienced staff resident within an AMI and the support of the AEMFBE.
