Endowment
The AEMFBE is a nonprofit foundation created by Alfred E. Mann as a conduit for the bulk of his current and future estate, mostly directed towards the creation of a number of Alfred E. Mann Institutes for Biomedical Development (AMIs) at U.S. universities. Each of the AMIs will be established with an endowment of at least $100 million dollars and up to an additional $100 million dollars in operating capital. The undiluted capital provided by Mr. Mann through the AEMFBE accelerates the process of bringing biomedical technologies to full development. The goal is not only speed but also to substantially enhance the value of those technologies before licensing, sale, company spin-out or other exit strategies.
With the appropriate capital the university co-governed AMI is able to conduct the phases of commercialization of selected university-owned intellectual property. During the phases of market analysis and identification of appropriate exit strategies to a commercial partner, the AMI may be the recipient of additional funds from the AEMFBE at the request of the AMI Board of Directors and at the approval of the AEMFBE Board of Directors.
The AMIs are designed to be self-sustaining entities that will benefit financially from their commercial successes, perpetuating the humanitarian efforts of delivering compelling biomedical technology more rapidly to patients.
